Tis the season. Tis the season for novelty beer cans, limited edition summer flavours and 1.5 litre bottles of Grolsch. This is the time of year when breweries release their summer seasonal beer. With titles covering, summer, blonde, harvest and golden, these are pale beers with easy drinking qualities for scoffing on a hot summers day in front of the cricket. But nothing more suggests Christmas is here than Grolsch releasing a limited rum of their premium lager in 1.5 litre bottles. These bottles are a scaled up version of their smaller 500ml brothers with the beautifully ornate Grolsch Brewry logo embossed into the glass and traditional ceramic and gasket flip top lid, if just slightly larger, seals in the giant bottles goodness. Brewed by the Grolsch Bierbrouwerrij in the Netherlands it’s a light in colour Euorpean larger with a 5% alcohol content. Grolsch is a unique, aquired taste, more of a meal beer it suits being consumed with traditional Christmas fare. Equally at home with a traditional white Chrsitmas of hot, juicy, golden brown trukey and crispy skinned jacket potatoes as with a traditional Aussie Christmas of cold prawns and cold cuts of ham. One can be forgiven for surcuming to the goal of trying to knock a whole 1.5 litre bottle off in one sitting (before it gets warm) after all it tis the season to be jolly. An empty bottle raises the opportunity for another goal, to make 1.5 litres of home made tomato sauce to fill the bottle, as the ceramic and gasket stopper makes for an excellent seal to store that tomatoey goodness till footy season where it will eventually accompany a pie and the latest State of Origin novelty beer can. Merry Christmas!
